I’ve been drinking, gin through dawn
ice cracks against glass, reminds me I’m alone. 

and winter, she takes a breath 
I’m drowning in a whirlpool full of life’s last regret.

her heartbeat, no longer pounds my chest 
there was nothing I could say when she whispered, there’s nothing left. 

as the rain came, as the love strained,
impossible to carry on …
